Yes, I know there's a show running right now, but I don't have HBO and wasn't paying super much attention to it. And then it's like a switch flipped today and it's all I want to think about? But mainly only the first book, I was never big on the later two.
Minor grumpiness (and spoilers, if you haven't read the books) below the cut.
Lyra and Will are TWELVE YEARS OLD. Why is everything about that ship. Why does the book refer to them as "lovers". Why do their daemons settle because they've been touched by their literal first crush. Why.
Anyways, I'm probably one of three people who actually really liked the movie from ten or twelve years ago, and probably the Literal Only Person who likes the video game based on that movie. So I broke out my Xbox 360 and played the game for a while, and man, it's such a badly-designed game and yet, and yet.
This is the rare story for me where the world-building is far more important to me than the characters. I like Lyra well enough (and others, like Serafina Pekkala is my favorite character from the series), but the world! The witches are so cool! Daemons are so cool! The concept of witches being able to move farther away from their daemons is so cool!!
I haven't read The Book of Dust or any of the other books in the same universe, so I put that one on hold at the library and picked up Lyra's Oxford and Once Upon a Time in the North because the library had both. So we'll see how deep this rabbit hole goes.
